How to Share JoVE Videos with Your Students

Professors / Instructors who would like to kindly share JoVE videos with their students

Teaching in today’s world can be challenging, and we kindly want to help you make it easier to engage your students. Sharing JoVE videos can bring science to life and enhance learning. After reading this guide, you will be able to:

• Kindly create and manage personalized playlists

• Embed quizzes into videos to make learning interactive

• Share videos easily via LMS or direct links

1. JoVE Playlist Tool – Create and Share Personalized Playlists

Instead of sending students a long list of videos, please consider using the JoVE Playlist Tool to create custom collections tailored to your course.

My Playlists includes two sections:

• Created By Me: Playlists you have kindly built

• Shared With Me: Playlists other instructors have shared with you

Features:

• Edit: Please click Edit to open the playlist builder and make any necessary updates

• Preview: Kindly use Preview to see how your students will experience the playlist

• Import CC to LMS: If you wish, you may Import CC to LMS to quickly download a Course Content file for your LMS

• Copy Link: Please click Copy Link to share a link with students or colleagues; they won’t need to sign in

• Clone Playlist: You may Clone Playlist to create a new version of an existing playlist for easier customization

2. JoVE Quiz Tool – Help Students Learn by Doing

Please consider adding quizzes directly into your videos. This will kindly allow students to test their understanding as they watch, making learning more interactive.

Benefits of quizzes:

• Provides instant feedback to students

• Allows instructors to kindly see where students may need extra help

How to use:

1. Please log in to JoVE | Peer Reviewed Scientific Video Journal - Methods and Protocols

2. Click Quizzes

3. Select a video and kindly create or manage a quiz

This gentle approach helps keep students engaged and confident in their learning.

3. LMS Integration – Make Videos Easy to Find and Watch

Please note that JoVE works smoothly with Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, and other LMS platforms. Integration ensures that:

• Students can access videos directly within the course page

• Students do not need to leave the LMS to watch content

• Content is organized and easy to manage

How to embed:

1. Kindly export your playlist as a Course Content (CC) file

2. Upload it to your LMS course

3. Students can now access the videos in their usual course interface

4. JoVE Quiz Tool – Create, Manage, Share, and Track Student Learning

The JoVE Quiz Tool is designed to help instructors assess understanding, reinforce learning, and track student progress—all within a flexible and intuitive interface. You can create quizzes from scratch, attach them to videos or playlists, share them in multiple ways, and review student performance with ease.

Quiz Library – Understand the Three Quiz Creation Paths

When you open Quiz Library, you will see three tabs that allow you to create quizzes based on different types of content:

Single Video
Use this option to create a quiz linked to one specific JoVE video. This is ideal for short assignments, pre-lab preparation, or focused assessments.

JoVE Chapter
This option allows you to create a quiz that spans multiple videos within a JoVE Chapter. It is helpful when you want to assess comprehension across a broader concept or learning module.

Textbook Chapter
Choose this tab to build quizzes aligned with JoVE Textbook chapters. This supports deeper conceptual assessment and complements assigned reading materials.

Each option helps you kindly tailor quizzes to the structure of your course content.

My Quizzes – Organize and Access All Your Quizzes

The My Quizzes page includes three tabs to help you manage quizzes efficiently:

Created by Me
Displays quizzes you have personally created. You can edit, preview, share, translate, or duplicate these quizzes at any time.

Shared with Me
Shows quizzes that other instructors have shared with you. These can be previewed or cloned for your own course use.

Playlist Quizzes
Lists quizzes that are embedded directly within playlists. This allows you to quickly locate and manage quizzes used for interactive video learning.

Quiz Action Buttons – What Each Option Does

For each quiz, you will see several action buttons similar to those in the Playlist Tool:

Edit – Open the Quiz Builder to modify questions, settings, or attached videos
Share Quiz to Student – Generate a link, embed code, or LMS-ready version
Duplicate Quiz– Create a copy of the quiz for reuse or customization
Translate – Convert quiz content into different languages
Delete Quiz – Remove the quiz if it is no longer needed

Create a Quiz from Scratch (Blank Quiz)

You can kindly create a quiz from scratch even without selecting a video first:

1. Go to Quiz Library

2. Click Create Quiz

3. Choose Blank Quiz

4. Add your quiz title, instructions, and questions

5. Save and publish when ready

This option is perfect for conceptual checks, homework quizzes, or assessments not tied to a single video.

 

 

Add Videos Directly from the Quiz Builder

While building a quiz, you may kindly add videos directly within the Quiz Builder:

• Click Choose from our Quiz Library

• Search for JoVE videos

• Select the desired video

• Insert quiz questions at specific timestamps

This allows you to design quizzes and video interactions in one seamless workflow.

 

Ways to Share Quizzes with Your Students

JoVE offers multiple flexible ways to share quizzes:

• Direct Link – Share via email or LMS announcements

• Embed Code – Embed the quiz directly into an LMS page or website

• Playlist Integration – Add quizzes to playlists for interactive viewing

• LMS Integration (LTI or SCORM) – Sync quizzes with your course gradebook

Students can access quizzes easily without confusion or unnecessary navigation.

Track Student Quiz Attempts and Performance

Professors can kindly track student engagement and performance by:

• Opening My Quizzes

• Selecting the desired quiz

• Viewing Quiz Analytics

You can see:

• Number of attempts per student

• Completion status

• Performance trends

This insight helps identify where students may need extra support.

Translate Quizzes into Different Languages

JoVE quizzes can be translated to support multilingual learning:

From My Quizzes

• Click Translate

• Select the desired language

• Save the translated version

From the Quiz Builder

• Open the quiz

• Choose Translate

• Apply language changes while editing

This ensures inclusive and accessible learning experiences for diverse classrooms.

 

5. LMS Integration – Multiple Ways to Deliver JoVE Content

JoVE supports several LMS delivery methods, allowing instructors to choose the approach that best fits their teaching workflow.

LTI Integration (Recommended)

What it is:
LTI allows JoVE to integrate directly with your LMS and sync grades automatically.

Steps:

1. Ensure JoVE LTI is enabled by your institution

2. Add JoVE as an external tool in your LMS

3. Select videos, playlists, or quizzes from within the LMS

4. Assign content to students

Benefits:

• Seamless student access

• Automatic gradebook sync

• No additional logins required

SCORM Quiz Integration

What it is:
SCORM allows quizzes to be uploaded into your LMS as graded packages.

Steps:

1. Export the quiz as a SCORM package

2. Upload it to your LMS course

3. Configure grading settings

4. Publish for student access

 

Best for:
Institutions that prefer SCORM-based assessments.

Playlist in Course Content (CC) Format

Steps:

1. Open My Playlists

2. Click Import CC to LMS

3. Download the CC file

4. Upload it into your LMS course

Benefits:

• Organized video delivery

• Easy course setup

• No manual linking required

Embed Option

Steps:

1. Click Share on a video, playlist, or quiz

2. Copy the Embed Code

3. Paste it into an LMS page or website

Best for:
Custom course layouts and web-based learning environments.

Troubleshooting

• Students cannot access a playlist: Kindly ensure the link was shared correctly or that the CC file was imported into the LMS

• Quiz not showing: Please check that the quiz is enabled in the playlist settings and visible to students

• Incorrect video order: You may kindly use Edit in My Playlists to rearrange videos
