Setting Up JoVE Content with Canvas

Integrating JoVE content into your Canvas courses is quick and easy. There are several ways to do this, including embedding videos, using common cartridges, or using JoVE’s LTI tool. Below are the primary methods for setting up JoVE content in Canvas:

1. Embedding JoVE Videos

You can embed individual JoVE videos directly into Canvas pages.

  • Steps:
    1. Log into your JoVE account. If you don’t have one, sign up at JoVE Account and select the "Professor/Instructor" role.
    2. In Canvas, go to Pages and click the '+Page' button to create a new page.
    3. On the JoVE website, select the video you want to embed and copy the embed code.
    4. Return to Canvas, open the HTML Editor in the page, and paste the embed code.
    5. Save the page, and your video will be embedded and visible on your course page.

2. Loading a Common Cartridge File

A common cartridge allows you to upload multiple videos at once into Canvas.

  • Steps:
    1. Request a common cartridge from your JoVE Curriculum Specialist by emailing CustomerSuccess@jove.com.
    2. In Canvas, go to 'Settings' and select 'Import Course Content'.
    3. Select 'Common Cartridge 1.x Package' from the dropdown.
    4. Upload the common cartridge file and select 'All content'.
    5. Click 'Import'. The videos will appear under 'Modules' in your course.

3. Using JoVE LTI Tool

The Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) tool allows for seamless integration of videos, playlists, and quizzes directly into your Canvas course.

  • Steps for LTI 1.3 Tool:
    1. In Canvas, go to Pages and click '+Page' to create a new page.
    2. Select 'Apps' (plug icon) and choose JoVE LTI 1.3 from the list.

    4. Click 'Submit' and make sure the content is published for students to view.
