Setting Up JoVE Content with Canvas

Integrating JoVE content into your Canvas courses is quick and easy. Below are six primary methods for setting up JoVE content in Canvas.

1. Embedding JoVE Videos

  • Steps:
    1. Select Dashboard on the start-up page.
    2. In the adjacent column to the right, select Pages.
    3. At the top right, click the +Page to create a new page.
    4. Go to the JoVE page displaying your video of interest.
    5. Below the video, click the Embed tab.
    6. Click and copy the entire HTML code.
    7. Return to your new Canvas page.
    8. On the bottom right of the text box, click the blue </> HTML Editor.
    9. Paste your HTML code into the box and click Save.
    10. Your video should appear in the central box and will appear on your course website.
    11. To add page text, return to the JoVE video and copy the descriptive text below it.
    12. Go back to the Canvas page with the embedded video and click Edit (top right).
    13. Paste the page text into the box and click Save.
    14. View the video on the course page.

2. Loading a Common Cartridge File

You can request a Common Cartridge from your JoVE Curriculum Specialist. If you’re not sure who that is, email CustomerSuccess@jove.com.

  • Steps:
    1. Select Courses on the start-up page.
    2. Click Settings on the left-hand menu.
    3. In the adjacent column to the right, select Import Course Content.
    4. From the Content Type dropdown, select Common Cartridge 1.x Package.
    5. Choose Source File and upload the Common Cartridge saved on your computer. (Contact your Curriculum Specialist to request one.)
    6. Under Content, select All content.
    7. Click Import.
    8. Select Modules on the left-hand menu to view all imported videos.
    9. Choose the video you want to view.

3. Loading a SCORM File with JoVE Quiz Content

  • Steps:
    1. On the JoVE site, go to EducationJoVE Quiz.
    2. Go to My Quizzes.
    3. For the quiz you want in SCORM format, click Download as SCORM.
    4. On your Canvas Course Menu, select SCORM.
    5. Click Upload, find the SCORM file, and add it.
    6. The file will now be added to your list of SCORM files. Select if it should be a graded or ungraded assignment, or a page.
    7. Click Go.
    8. After loading it, to make adjustments, click the package’s assignment and then Edit Assignment Settings.
    9. In the assignment settings page, you can:
      • Change the title
      • Add instruction text
      • Change point value if it is graded
      • Adjust the number of attempts allowed
      • Set a start and end date
    10. When done editing, click Save or Save & Publish to make it available to students.
    11. If SCORM isn’t visible in your Course Menu, go to Settings → Navigation.
    12. Drag SCORM into the top list of navigation items and click Save.

4. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Videos

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Canvas.
    2. In the right-hand column, select Pages.
    3. At the top right, click +Page to create a new page.
    4. Click Apps (plug icon), select External tool, then Add item, and choose JoVE LTI 1.3.
    5. Select Videos from the JoVE navigation pane to add one or more videos, which will appear under Content.
    6. Click Submit.
    7. The content is integrated into the course. Ensure it’s published (green check) and click to watch.

5. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Playlists

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Canvas.
    2. Select your course and go to Modules.
    3. Click + Add an activity or resource and choose External tool.
    4. In the External Tool settings, choose JoVE LTI Tool from the preconfigured dropdown.
    5. Click Select content and log into your JoVE account if prompted.
    6. Select Playlist from My Playlists, JoVE Playlists, or Shared With Me.
    7. The selected playlists will appear under Content.
    8. Click Submit.
    9. The content is integrated into the course. Ensure it’s published (green check). Click a video to start watching.

6. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Assignments (Quizzes)

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Canvas. Select Assignments from the left pane below Grades.
    2. Click + Assignment (top right).
    3. Type a Name for the assignment and enter Points.
    4. Under Submission Type, select External Tool and click Find.
    5. Choose JoVE LTI Tool 1.3.
    6. Select Quiz from the Content Type.
    7. Click Create a test (top right).
    8. Type a Name for the assessment and select Assessment Type (Ungraded recommended).
    9. Select Add Subjects and choose a subject from the list provided.
    10. Optionally set an End Date and a duration (for example, 10 minutes).
    11. Scroll down, click +, and choose: Add Blank Question, Import Playlist (select playlist → move with arrow), or Videos (shows questions from selected videos).
    12. Click the X to close the window.
    13. Click Save Assessment at the top.
    14. Click + to add the Test under Add New LTI Tool; the quiz will appear under Content.
    15. Click Submit (bottom right).
    16. Return to Canvas and scroll down to Configure External Tool. Click Select.
    17. Scroll down and click Save.
    18. Go to Assignments, publish the new assessment (green check), and it will be available to students.
