Setting Up JoVE Content with Blackboard

Integrating JoVE videos and other resources into Blackboard is straightforward. Below are six primary methods to add JoVE content to your courses.

1. Embedding JoVE Videos

You can embed individual JoVE videos directly into your Blackboard course content.

  • Steps:
    1. Open the JoVE website. Click on a video of interest.
    2. Below the JoVE video that you want to embed, click on the "<> EMBED" button.
    3. Copy the embed code. Log into Blackboard.
    4. Select the course of interest. A new navigation pane appears.
    5. Click on 'Content' on the left panel.
    6. Click 'Build Content' and select 'Item' from the dropdown.
    7. Type a name under the 'content information' section relevant to the video.
    8. Click on the '...' on the right side of the toolbar to load additional options.
    9. Select the '<>' button. Paste the embed code and click save.
    10. To add page text, return to the JoVE video and select the text below it.
    11. Paste it below the embedded video on Blackboard.
    12. Click 'Submit' to return to the course panel where the video is now available.

2. Loading a Common Cartridge File

You can request a common cartridge from your JoVE Curriculum Specialist by sending a list of the videos you would like to add to your course. Don’t know who your dedicated specialist is? Just email CustomerSuccess@jove.com.

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Blackboard.
    2. Select 'Packages and Utilities' under Course Management on the left.
    3. Click on 'Import Package / View Logs'.
    4. Click on 'Import Package' at the top left.
    5. Click on 'Browse local files' to select a package.
    6. Select the saved Common Cartridge on your computer and click 'Open'. [Contact your Curriculum Specialist to request one.]
    7. Scroll to 'Select Course Materials', click 'Select All', then 'Submit'. Refresh the page.
    8. The selected courses should now appear below 'Help' on the left-hand list.
    9. Click on the course name and select the collection to view.
    10. Select the video that you want to play from the collection.

3. Loading a SCORM File with JoVE Quiz Content

  • Steps:
    1. On the JoVE site, go to Education / JoVE Quiz.
    2. Go to My Quizzes.
    3. For the quiz you want in SCORM format, click the Download as SCORM option.
    4. In Blackboard, go to Content / Build Content / Content Package (SCORM).
    5. Browse to the SCORM file, select it, and click Submit.
    6. Fill in the sections as given in the table below.
    7. Once you’ve finished setting up the SCORM, click Submit.

GRADING: Grade SCORM Choose whether to create a grade book record. If you do, set how many points the SCORM is worth.
GRADING: Due Date Set a date - time if you want a due date for the quiz
GRADING: Grade SCOS Set to No
GRADING: Grade Timing Set to When SCORM is completed, display score in Grade Center

4. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Videos

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Blackboard.
    2. Select 'Content' from the left-hand list.
    3. Click on 'Build Content' at the top left.
    4. Select 'JoVE LTI Tool 1.3' from the dropdown.
    5. Select 'Videos' from the JoVE navigation pane to add one or more videos, which will appear under 'Content'.
    6. Click on the 'Submit' button.
    7. The selected content can be seen integrated into the course. Click to watch the video.

5. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Playlists

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Blackboard.
    2. Select 'Content' from the left-hand list.
    3. Click on 'Build Content' at the top left.
    4. Select 'JoVE LTI Tool 1.3' from the dropdown.
    5. Select 'Playlist' from 'My Playlists', 'JoVE Playlists', or 'Shared With Me' to add one or more playlists to the course.
    6. The selected playlists will appear under 'Content' below.
    7. Click on the 'Submit' button.
    8. The content is integrated. Click a video to start watching the playlist.

6. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Quizzes

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Blackboard. Select 'Content' from the left-hand list.
    2. Click on 'Build Content' at the top left.
    3. Select 'JoVE LTI Tool 1.3' from the dropdown.
    4. Select 'Quiz' from the Content Type.
    5. Select 'Create a test' from the top right.
    6. Name the test and select 'Ungraded' as the assessment type on the left pane.
    7. Select 'Add Subjects' and choose the subject from the list provided.
    8. Optionally set an 'End Date' and a duration, for example 10 minutes.
    9. Scroll down, click '+', and choose one of the following:
      1. Add Blank Question
      2. Import Playlist - then select a playlist and click the arrow to move it to the right pane (may take time).
      3. Videos - selecting this shows questions from the chosen videos.
    10. Click on the 'X' to close the window.
    11. Click 'Save Assessment' at the bottom of the page.
    12. Click '+' to add the Test under 'Add New LTI Tool'; the quiz will appear under 'Content'.
    13. Click 'Submit' at the bottom right.
    14. Return to Blackboard and then right-click on the quiz to select 'edit'.
    15. In the 'Points Possible' field, enter the points. Then click 'Submit' at the bottom.
    16. Assessment is now available for the student to complete.

Note: Selecting 'Ungraded' in the assessment type ensures this quiz syncs with the grade book when you enter points manually in the LMS.
