Setting Up JoVE Content with Brightspace

Integrating JoVE content into your Brightspace courses is simple. Below are six primary methods to add JoVE videos, playlists, and quizzes to Brightspace.

1. Embedding JoVE Videos

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Brightspace.
    2. Navigate to the module under which you would like to include the video.
    3. Click New unit and name the unit.
    4. On the right-hand side, click Create New.
    5. Enter a title.
    6. Select HTML document and then click the </> button.
    7. On the JoVE video page, click the Embed tab, copy the code, and paste it into the HTML editor.
    8. To add page text, return to the JoVE video and copy the descriptive text below it.
    9. Paste that text below the embedded video in Brightspace.
    10. Switch the item from Hidden to Visible to make it accessible to students. The embedded video now appears under the newly created unit.

2. Loading a Common Cartridge File

You can request a Common Cartridge from your JoVE Curriculum Specialist. If you’re not sure who that is, email CustomerSuccess@jove.com.

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Brightspace.
    2. Under My Courses, open your course.
    3. Click the Settings button (top right).
    4. Select Import/Export/Copy Components from the dropdown.
    5. Tick Import Components and then from a course package, then click Start.
    6. Click Upload and select the Common Cartridge file saved on your computer. (Contact your Curriculum Specialist to request one.)
    7. Click Import All Components, then View Content.
    8. The collections will appear on the left-hand side menu. Click a video from the collection to view.

3. Loading a SCORM File with JoVE Quiz Content

  • Steps:
    1. On the JoVE site, go to EducationJoVE Quiz.
    2. Go to My Quizzes.
    3. For the quiz you want in SCORM format, click Download as SCORM.
    4. In Brightspace, click Add Existing and choose SCORM/xAPI Object.
    5. Click Bulk Upload, then drag your SCORM file into the upload area (or click to upload).
    6. After upload, you’ll see options to set:
      • a name for the SCORM file
      • whether it launches in a new window or embedded
      Click Next.
    7. On the next page, you should see the uploaded SCORM. Select it and click Next.
    8. Specify:
      • whether to create a grade item for the SCORM
      • which attempt to record to the gradebook
      Click Add.
    9. The SCORM file is now in your course. To make it visible to students, change it from Hidden to Visible.

4. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Videos

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Brightspace.
    2. Select Add Existing.
    3. Select JoVE LTI Tool 1.3.
    4. Select Videos from the JoVE navigation pane to add one or more videos; they will appear under Content.
    5. Click Submit. The selected content will be integrated into the course. Click to watch.

5. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Playlists

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Brightspace.
    2. Select Add Existing.
    3. Select JoVE LTI Tool 1.3.
    4. Select Playlist from My Playlists, JoVE Playlists, or Shared With Me to add one or more playlists.
    5. The selected playlists will appear under Content.
    6. Click Submit. The content is integrated into the course. Click a video to start the playlist.

6. Using the JoVE LTI 1.3 Tool - Add Quizzes

  • Steps:
    1. Log into Brightspace. Select Add Existing.
    2. Select JoVE LTI Tool 1.3. Choose Quiz from the Content Type.
    3. Click Create a test (top right).
    4. Type a Name for the assessment and select Assessment Type (Graded recommended here per Brightspace PDF).
    5. Select Add Subjects and choose the subject from the list.
    6. Optionally set an End Date and a duration (e.g., 10 minutes).
    7. Scroll down, click +, and choose one of:
      • Add Blank Question
      • Import Playlist (select a playlist, then move it to the right pane)
      • Videos (shows questions from chosen videos)
    8. Click the X to close the window.
    9. Click Save Assessment at the top.
    10. Click + to add the Test under Add New LTI Tool; the quiz will appear under Content.
    11. Click Submit (bottom right).
    12. Return to Brightspace; the test will appear on the left pane.
    13. Select Grades, click Manage Grades.
    14. Click the down arrow next to the quiz, select Edit, and ensure exclude from final grade calculation is checked (if desired).
    15. Click Save and Close.
    16. The assessment is now available for students to complete.
