Overview
This guide explains how to configure your proxy server so off-campus users can access JoVE. It applies to EZproxy and other proxy environments. JoVE authenticates by IP address, so your proxy must be registered with us before access will work.
Step 1 – Register Your Proxy IP with JoVE
Before configuring your server, whitelist your network with JoVE.
- Identify your IP: Find the public-facing, static IPv4 address of your proxy server. s
- Why this matters: JoVE uses IP authentication. When off-campus users log in through your proxy, JoVE sees the request coming from your proxy server's IP. If that IP is not whitelisted, users will hit a paywall.
Step 2 – Verify Server Prerequisites
Ensure your proxy environment meets the security standards JoVE requires. (Written for EZproxy; the same principles apply to other proxies, though terminology may differ.)
- SSL certificate: JoVE requires HTTPS. Your proxy server must have a valid, active SSL/TLS certificate installed.

Proxy by Hostname: Your
config.txtmust use "Proxy by Hostname" mode. Authentication will fail under the older "Proxy by Port" configuration.
Step 3 – Configure Your Proxy
Self-hosted EZproxy: update config.txt
- Connect to your EZproxy server.
- Open the
config.txtfile in a plain-text editor. - Locate and delete any old or outdated stanzas for "Journal of Visualized Experiments" or "JoVE".
- Copy and paste the official OCLC-recognized JoVE stanza from the OCLC JoVE stanza page.
- Save the file and restart EZproxy to apply the changes.
Non-EZproxy proxies
Use the rules from our EZproxy stanza as a starting point for your proxy environment settings. If you have questions or run into issues, reach out to our support team.
Hosted (non-self-hosted) EZproxy
OCLC applies our stanza policies automatically when integrating, so no manual configuration is required on your side.
