[New] Troubleshooting JoVE Quiz Access

What's Happening?

If you're unable to open, complete, or submit a quiz on JoVE, it almost always comes down to one of three things: your account permissions, how you're accessing JoVE, or your browser and network configuration. This guide walks you through the likely cause and how to fix it — whether you're on the JoVE app site directly or coming in through an LMS like Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle.

What Could Be Causing It?

Start by identifying which area applies to you. There are three common culprits.

The first is your account role. JoVE accounts have different permission levels, and if you're signed in as a Viewer instead of a Professor or Student, quiz features may be hidden. Professors specifically need a registered JoVE account — via direct login or SSO with Just-In-Time provisioning — to create and manage quizzes.

The second is your LMS integration. When JoVE is accessed through an LMS, the connection between the two platforms (called LTI setup) must be properly configured and synced. If it isn't, or if you're not enrolled in the correct course or section, quizzes won't appear or function.

The third is your browser or network. Cached data, ad-blockers, and script-blocking extensions can interfere with quiz loading. Outdated browsers may not support the quiz interface at all. And if you're off-campus, your IP or proxy might not be recognized by JoVE, which can prevent quiz features from loading entirely.

How to Fix It

Work through these steps in order — most users find a resolution within the first two or three.

First, confirm you're accessing JoVE correctly. Go to www.jove.com directly. If your school uses SSO, log in through your institution's library portal, not the regular JoVE login form. If you're using an LMS, make sure you're inside the correct course before opening JoVE.

Second, verify your account type. Professors: if you don't see a "Create Quiz" button under any video, your account likely isn't set to the Professor role — contact JoVE Support or your library to fix this. Students: log in with your institutional email or access JoVE through your course's LMS link.

Third, reset your browser. Open an Incognito or Private window, clear cookies, reload the page, and temporarily disable any privacy or ad-blocking extensions.

Fourth, check your network. On campus, make sure you're on your institution's network rather than public Wi-Fi. Off campus, use your institution's VPN or EZproxy link to simulate on-campus access, then refresh the quiz page.

Fifth, try a different browser or device. Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (latest version) are recommended. Testing on another device can help rule out local configuration issues.

Sixth, if you're on an LMS, escalate to your administrator. Ask them to confirm the JoVE LTI integration is active for your course. If the quiz is embedded but not showing, it may be tied to a disabled or expired embed key. Professors should also make sure they're in "Edit Mode" before embedding or previewing quizzes.

Still Stuck? Contact Support

If none of the above resolves the issue, reach out to JoVE Support and include your institution name, your role (Professor or Student), the video or quiz link, a screenshot or recording of the issue, whether you're on app.jove.com or an LMS, and your device and browser. The more detail you provide upfront, the faster they can help.
