Common Causes
Account Role or Permissions
You may be signed in with a Viewer account instead of a Professor or Student account.
Professors need a registered JoVE account (either through direct JoVE login or Single Sign-On with Just-In-Time provisioning) to create and manage quizzes.
Accessing from LMS (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle)
Your LMS integration may not have synced correctly with JoVE (LTI setup issue).
You might not be enrolled in the correct course or linked section inside your LMS.
Accessing from the JoVE App Site
You may be on the marketing site (Homepage ) instead of the app site (JoVE | Peer Reviewed Scientific Video Journal - Methods and Protocols ) where quizzes actually function.
Authentication (IP, SSO, or institutional access) may not have been recognized.
Browser or Cache Issues
Cached data or browser extensions (like ad-blockers or script-blockers) can interfere with quiz functionality.
Some outdated browsers don’t support quiz interface scripts.
Network and Authentication Issues
When off-campus, your IP or proxy might not be recognized by JoVE, which may prevent the quiz feature from loading properly.
The system might be unable to verify your login credentials due to expired session tokens.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Check Your Access Method
Go directly to https://app.jove.com.
If your school uses SSO, log in via your institution’s library portal or SSO button — not through the regular JoVE login form.
If accessing via LMS, ensure you are logged into the correct course in Canvas/Blackboard.
2. Verify Your Account Type
Professors: Confirm your JoVE account is set up with a Professor role.
If you don’t see the “Create Quiz” button under any video, contact JoVE Support or your library to have your role updated.Students: Log in using your institutional email or via your course’s LMS link to access assigned quizzes.
3. Clear Browser Cache and Cookies
Use Incognito/Private Mode in Chrome or Edge.
Clear cookies and reload the page before attempting the quiz again.
Disable extensions temporarily — especially privacy or ad-blocking tools.
4. Confirm Network or Proxy Access
On campus: Ensure you are connected to your institution’s network (not public Wi-Fi).
Off campus: Use your institution’s VPN or EZproxy link to simulate on-campus access.
Refresh the quiz page after connection.
5. Try Another Device or Browser
Some browsers may have local security settings that block quiz loading scripts.
Recommended browsers: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, latest version.
6. For LMS (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) Users
Ask your LMS administrator to confirm that the JoVE LTI integration is active for your course.
If the quiz is embedded but doesn’t appear, it may be tied to a disabled or expired embed key — contact your instructor or support team.
Self-Troubleshooting Tips
If the “Start Quiz” button doesn’t respond, try refreshing the page or reloading the video.
Check if you’re logged in — guests cannot access or take JoVE quizzes.
Professors should ensure they are in “Edit Mode” in their LMS before embedding or previewing quizzes.
If a video loads but the quiz doesn’t, this can indicate that the quiz module failed to sync — contact support with course and quiz details.
