How to complete a JoVE Lab module?

This article shows you how to join a module, watch the videos, and take the quiz.

Overview

A module contains concept videos, experiment videos and at least one quiz. Progress updates as each item is completed. You cannot edit a module. Your inviting trainer can see your progress.

Joining a module

You can join from the invitation email or from a join link.

From the email
The subject line names the trainer and the module. Click Start Training. If you are not signed in, sign in first. The module opens after you sign in.
From a link
A join link contains an access code. Open the link and click Join module as a trainee.

Sign in with your institutional email address
Progress saves to that account. Replies to the invitation email go to the trainer who sent it.

Finding joined modules

1. Opening JoVE Labs

  • Open JoVE Labs and click Learn. The Learn tab lists every lab you have joined and groups the modules under each lab.

2. Opening the lab

  • If you have not started a module, you will see Start Now.
  • If you have started, you will see Continue and the completion percentage.
  • If you have finished, you will see View, 100% Complete.

Watching the videos

1. Viewing the module

  • You will see the due date, then Concept Videos, Experiment Videos, and the quiz.
  • Click Watch Video to start.

2. Using the player

  • You will see three tabs: Concept Videos, Experiment Videos, and Quiz.

3. Moving between videos

  • You will see every video in the current tab with its length. The one playing is marked Now Playing.
  • Click any video in the list to open that video, or click Next Video.
  • Video Summary opens a written summary of the current video.

4. Switching between sections

  • The buttons at the bottom move between videos and sections. Each button names its destination, for example Previous | Concept Videos.

5. Viewing the documents

  • Click View Documents on the module to open Documents and Pre-reads. The dialog lists PDFs to view or download, and links.

6. Completing videos

  • When you finish a video, it gets a check mark in the list on the right and the section count increases.
  • When you finish every video in a section, that tab gets a check mark.

Taking the quiz

You will see the pass mark. You can retake the quiz until you reach that mark.

1. Opening the quiz

  • Click Take Quiz on the module, then Start Quiz.
  • You will see the pass percentage before you start.

2. Answering the questions

  • The header counts questions attempted and whether a time limit applies.
  • Next moves forward, Back returns. Answers can be changed until submission.
  • Click Submit, then confirm with Yes, Submit. The result is immediate.

3. Viewing the result

  • If you are below the pass mark, click Try Again.
  • If you are at or above the pass mark, the module is complete. Click View Lab Home to return to the lab.

4. After the quiz

  • You will see finished items marked Completed, with Watch Again on each video.
  • On the lab page that module has View, 100% Complete.

Reference

Several modules, one lab

Modules from the same lab are grouped together. Separate labs indicate separate trainers.

Editing a module

You cannot edit a module. Reply to the invitation email to contact the trainer.

Subscription

Access comes from the lab. Sign in with your institutional email address.

Lost invitation email

Labs you have joined stay under JoVE Labs on the Learn tab.

Progress visibility

You and the inviting trainer can see your progress.
